Happy birthday

Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Who's birthday is it today? Why was it not celebrated? It's my BLOG'S BIRTHDAY! YAY!!!

Finished interviews for ODAC Exco, frankly I think I'm not going to make it. The way Mr. Tan talked to me was giving me the impression of like:
"Hey Ivan, you're not going to make it into Exco, but I still want you to put in your full contribution into ODAC and deal with the disappointment like as if you never ever expected yourself to get into Exco. You're not going to make Exco, but I still want to see more out of you. I'm not scolding you this time, but make any more mistakes and I will not hesitate to kick you, just like I threatened the others."

...or, maybe I'm just taking on a more cynical view of things here ><

PI is due tomorrow, and I have to settle some nitty gritty details here and there. Thinking back, actually there's quite alot to settle. Better start now lol. I have a problem with people who introduce footnotes in their PI, though. But not all of them. Those people who put footnotes so that they can explain like the function of an organisation that they want to work with to make things clearer for example, that's fine by me. What's not fine by me, is those people who put additional points for their PI in their footnotes, which frankly makes me disgusted. Rules are rules for a reason. Word limits are imposed for a reason. I believe the 500 word limit was set so that the teachers do not have to read so much bullshit and get the students to write straight to the point. Now with the convenient and handy function of footnotes, we shall defeat that purpose! Hurray!

It's really a disappointing sight because exceeding word limits was like the tradtion back in my RI days. Every assignment was not considered done unless the word limit was exceeded. Word limits were set for the sake of setting them, and I see people having 30 page reports when the word limit stipulates a maximum of around 5 pages. And no, the person who did the 30 page report in the past did not have a heck load of pictures. It was pure word spammage. What for? To ensure that he hits every single mark on the rubric. What happened to conciseness? What happened to clarity? What happened to cutting down on the bullshit? Apparently it didn't happen in RI.

Now I move on to JC, I see 500 word limit imposed on PI, and I think, "Finally people are going to respect the word limit. Finally people will not dare to exceed for fear of their marks. Finally people are learning to be concise and straight to the point." One fine day, footnotes came along and destroyed my dream like a tank crushing a banana. It's disappointing to see that no change has taken place. It's still the same ol' system of "spammage wins the day".

Very disappointing indeed.

The past week

Sunday, April 20, 2008

...has been a total killer. I've had stuff to stay back for almost every day from Monday to Saturday, and I slept a total of 4 hours on Thursday and Friday. Nice.

Firstly, rock climbing. I took my sweet sweet revenge against the walls on Thursday, which I failed to conquer on Tuesday. Thanks to Mr. Leong's wall climbing advice, because it seriously helped me cut down on my arm fatigue and balance issues during climbing, which was my reason for failure on Tuesday. With that, 1 star rock climbing is settled! Next up, 1 star kayaking, which is during Term 3. Long time to go before then.

Planning for the selection camp has been rather tiring, and thanks to Lynette for dealing with most of the work for the food section. Planning for food is more tiring than it seems, especially when you do have to buy all the food for the entire batch after an exhausting rock climbing session. Felt abit last minute with the food, but it turned out quite okay during the camp.

Friday and Saturday were the ODAC selection camp days, and none of the 3 people managed to get in. There was one person who did come close, but at the end of the day, we decided not to take him because he scared some of the girls, and also because we liked the status quo alot. We all felt quite bad with regards to the way in which we chose to not select him, but at the end of the day I think its a good decision because we are good now, with or without him. Happy to see that we were quite hardcore, when I look at the concurrent floorball camp and our camp, I'm happy to say that we seemed alot more hardworking than them XD They went to jam the lift to trap people (leech and seng han), play soccer, watch rock concert during the camp (lol shihua), while we were at our various stations falling asleep ensuring that everything we planned for the 2nd intakers went well.

I think I shall run for ODAC Exco, but given what Mr. Tan said to me last time, hopes do not seem high. Oh well I'll take what I can get then.

PI IS FREAKING DISGUSTING. So much work for just some 500 word report, and when I did complete the report, all that happened was that it got shot down by the PW teacher who cites the lack of creativity for my action plan. Have to revamp the whole thing now, wish me good luck.

Oh and Chem SPA next week >< Need to hardcore and make sure everything turns out well during the SPA, so that I can ensure I pwn in my first practical which counts in the A-Levels (ZOMG! :O) Hope I don't need luck for this. Heh.

Sex and Gender

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Constantly discussing this topic during GP lessons recently when we started on our Social Issues infopack.

What's the difference between gender and sex?

The answer is simple.

"One is referring to one person while one is between two people."
- Lessons from my sister's GP teacher (Y)

Random post when I'm bored with no game to play and no anime to watch :(
Plenty of homework to do of course, but yea. You know me too well :)

30

Friday, April 11, 2008

I did churn out some magic. This year, for the first time ever, I scored 30 points for NAPFA, breaking quite a few personal bests along the way. Didn't really expect to get this, and I hope I can maintain this until next year.

Anyways:

Standing broad jump: 248 cm
I have no idea how I did this. Usually when I trained I would be jumping around 230+, and then all of a sudden this popped out. Elated yet shocked, no idea how to describe how I felt for this first station. After I did get A for this station, it suddenly gave me some hope that I could get 30 points, and it wasn't a pipe dream after all.

Sit and Reach: 48 cm
Every year before this I always get 47 cm. This year I finally managed to get to 48. Bloody hell.

Chin-ups: 14
Told myself to do 15 before that. But at least still managed to come quite close so it's okay la.

Shuttle run: 9.9s
First run get 10.3s, then start to panic. Decided to focus more on the turning, and managed to get 9.9s on the second try. Lucky me, because the A was 10.1, and it would have been sad if I didn't get it. First time A by the way.

Sit-ups: 65
My only hope for top 10 list, hoping and praying that no one else decides to chiong this station like I did. Hope... and pray...

YAY! First time I managed such a feat, so of course I naturally felt damn good after that. Thanks to the people who encouraged me along - all our guy classmates - it really helped me alot. Obviously ODAC training has also helped out alot due to its HARDCORE nature, so must credit the PT as well.

Speaking of ODAC training, I had ODAC training today after NAPFA. PT session, totally destroyed my legs because of crazy stair climbing with weights, totally destroyed my arms because of excessive arm training (pushups, supported dips etc.), and destroyed my tailbone because of excessive V-snaps (or jack-knife, whatever). In essence, I am ruined lol. Oh well, hope the weekend helps for recovery.

Chem Mock SPA 1 (edited)

Ever seen a person get 40 cm3 for a titration in which the answer was supposed to be around 23cm3? I present to you, my Chemistry Mock SPA.

Until now I still do not know what I did wrong during the practical, but it has to be a hell of a mistake to cause that big of a discrepancy. My practical has skillz.

PW groups got released, everyone was getting anxious as they were being released. I was hugging Nick Yun's arm because I myself was damn scared. But I got a nice group: Timothy, Yuwen and Ruiting. The only 4-person group in my class, but I am so so glad that I got this group over others, for reasons that I'm sure everyone knows of. PW seems like a whole different ball game as compared to RE back in RI, so I must really work damn well with my group members to excel at the project we choose to do.

Today was 2.4km run for NAPFA, and I got A for the first time ever since I started taking NAPFA in primary school. Very happy with myself definitely, getting a PB of 10:10, but my legs are partially dead, and I still have 5 stations left tomorrow to do. Shuttle run and Standing Broad Jump, here I come.

Let's see what magic I can churn out tomorrow then. Hardcore time.

Class CIP

Sunday, April 6, 2008

Today was class CIP, and out of the 19 people who were supposed to turn up (it was 20 at first but Jon Neo ponned with a "valid" reason), 17 people did. And so I am quite happy. Now everything goes downhill from there.

A large group of us were supposed to turn up at J8 at 7 am in case we needed to eat, and to allow for time to walk there etc. Only Zhefei, Abi Kang, Shihua and I managed to turn up on time. The rest turned up late (around 7.20) and still went to eat. *cough*Christian*cough* This made us leave J8 at around 7.35, and we were supposed to
meet at the meeting place at Bishan Park 1 at 7.45 am. I was thinking, "Oh well if we get the correct bus things will be fine in the end."

How wrong I was.

Zhefei led us to Bishan Park with bus, sure, but it was Bishan Park 2. It was at the other side of Bishan Park, and Bishan Park is god-knows-how-big. So we decided to walk along the road until we finally managed to get the correct place. We knew it was going to be super long, but we went on anyway, hoping for some miracle to happen.

For once, Nic Yun was the miracle. His mother was driving a car, and all eight of us (excluding Nic Yun) squeezed into that one single car, with me and Christian in the boot, which was squeezy like crazy. After getting directions from Yuwen, we managed to get to the location.

Stepping into the place, we realized one thing - mud. But being a member of ODAC, this wasn't much of a problem for me as for anyone else. Vionna and Sabrina were wiping their shoes with tissue and I was like O_o what's the point lol. But oh well, whatever makes you happy XD

Christian and I got together and were in charge of this old man in a wheelchair. We were with the old man for the taichi session (which we were very apprehensive about - Christian said he would whack somebody up if he was asked to do taichi because it looks freaking retarded. "Gosh.") After wheeling the old man to the starting point we could not stand next to the wheelchairs and our appointed old man because it was too crowded, so we stepped aside. When the horn sounded, the inevitable happened. Our old man got "stolen" away by some random adult, and Christian and I were like "WTF IS GOING ON?!" (Actually Christian didn't really mind XD) Only after consulting with the rest of my classmates did we realize that everyone shared the same fate - everyone's old man/old woman - was stolen.

After the meaningless walk, which we simply talked cock for, we left during the health screening because nothing else required our participation and services. Zhefei was quite uptight and adamant that the event was quite a failure XD

Moving to AMK Hub, we ate and then tried to decide where to move after that. Typical of our class, no decision could be made at all -.- Most of our class left, and the remainder (Eugene, Nic Yun, Yuwen, Abi Kang and I) went to TCC at City Hall to chill out. Talked a whole lot of crap (Abi Kang left halfway), mostly very sexual topics due to the presence of Nic Yun, me and Eugene LOL. Can't help it I guess XD

As we were waiting for the MRT to arrive, there was this crazy woman who kept shouting at this couple. She said stuff like "ONLY I HAVE THE RIGHT TO ENTER THROUGH THIS DOOR!" Nic Yun and I thought she was funny, so we entered through the same door, together with a group of people. On the train she also argued with this woman who had a kid along with her lol. When she left the train, one whole bunch of people cheered LOL. Laughed like crazy then XD

Next time there's no decision as to where to go, I'm simply going to chill out somewhere. Quite nice just talking to people and relaxing. With Nic Yun, Eugene and I, things are never going to be boring anyway, so it was a fun experience. To the people who left: You guys should have stayed :)
